The Second Commandment

Exodus 20:4 "Thou Shalt not make unto thee any graven image or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above or that is in the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of they that hate me; and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments"

First we need to recognize the two separate commands in the second commandment.  Lets start by looking at what God means when he says 'Graven image'.  Man likes to redefine things we dont understand fully to suit our own interpretations but we must again be aware that in doing so we are then changing Gods meaning.
Man has been taught that a graven image means something we have to bow down to but what does scripture specifically say? If we read the scripture listed above in Exodus 20:4 again, Thou shalt not MAKE unto thee any graven image..... The term 'make' is used which is very different from the term "worship" or "bow down to" in the beginning of this commandment.  Later on in the scripture however, it does then talk of not bowing down or worshiping idols or statues. But they are separate statements.  He made sure to state these separately and for that reason we should stop to ask why?

In the Exodus scripture it says we are not to make any images of anything in heaven, in earth or in the waters but then if we read Deuteronomy 4:16-18 it gives more description and an even clearer explanation of what things we are not to make graven images of.  Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female. The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air. The likeness of any thing that creepethon the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth.

If looked up in the version I use which is the Authorized King James version 1839 Dictionary or Concordance says that "Graven" is something that is "carved or cut out"   And that same concordance shows that the term "image" means a drawing, picture, or statute of something; a copy or something very like another"   A few examples are Man in his own image Gen 1:27, Not make any graven image Exodus 20:4

Graven images then would be any three dimensional drawing picture or statues of anything male or female that represents anything in heaven, anything in the earth including beast, bird, creeping thing  and then anything in the sea below including fish in the waters below. It then later goes into more detail explaining how we are not to worship any of these things.

Does this constitute anything we collect as well then? One of the consequences of collecting things as a innocent hobby later become idols of the heart as we become attached to our collections of figurines, dolls toys etc. We may think its innocent enough nevertheless it teeters as a form of idolatry and it draws our attention away from God and our families.

Deuternonomy 7:26 "Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing"

With this being said does giving our childrens dolls, toys and stuffed animals then also break the second commandment? I know your first reaction is the same as mine ...."ok a little neurotic now maybe", but think about that for a second. We have already agreed that we interpret scripture the way we want in order to fit our lifestyle right? Stay with me for a second.... if He says there is to be no 3D images of anything in heaven or earth or the waters below and we buy our child a stuffed dolphin not thinking we are doing anything wrong....is that not an image of something in the seas? Again we go back to the fact that the second commandment doesnt mention that these things have to be worshipped in order to qualify as a graven image right? I know ....again I see the logic that still sounds innocent enough correct? Now take it one step further. When we give these items to our children most become attached to at least one specific item throughout their childhood.  That item usually follows them into their adolescent years in some cases and becomes a source of comfort for the child.  Who in reality should the child turn to in times of sorrow or distress for comfort and peace? Have we unknowingly been placing an inanimate stuffed object as a false sense of security and protection for our children to believe in rather than teaching them that their true saviour and protector is Jesus Christ?
It is made clear that ALL Graven images and idols are forms of abominations. Throughout history we have been told that they were used to attract spiritual demons and curses quite openly and still continue today in other countries in the form of voodoo and medicine men. They do this using dolls. Children were not to even touch the dolls as they were known to carry "magical" healing powers and today we give them innocently as gifts we think.
Did you know that Egyptians were buried with dolls so they would have spirit friends/servants in the spirit world ?
So maybe there is something more to dolls than we know but God is fully aware of....

The Second Commandment also then clearly states that we should not reduce God to a likeness of a physical object.I believe that the devil will use the false imagery of Jesus to trick mankind into worshiping him instead of God.  God is a living God not a statue or a picture. Yahweh does not need us to make statues, idols or images to worship Him or to sell or promote his kingdom. When we make images it distorts and limits our perceptions of Him.  Bowing down to pay homage to ones own image of God may appear as an act of devotion only until you understand Gods true purpose for us. All that is required is simple obedience to his teachings. God expects those who worship him to demonstrate their love by following his commandments not by following rituals in front of a statue.  Acts 17:29-30 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold or silver o stone graven by art or mans device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at: but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in which he will judge the world in righteousness..."

God is far greater than anything we can see or even imagine! He has left us specific instructions or commandments that he wants us to follow. It is not neurotic or fanatical to do what God commands of us. Was Daniel a fanatic when he refused to follow the crowd and bow down to King Nebuchadnezzar? Was Shadrack, Meshack and Abendigo fanatical to listen to God and stand for what they believed in?

In my house will be removing anything that is not of God in our home. I have done a walk through and have a few little statue items. I was a collector of unicorns(oops) when I was young but nothing as an adult really. If God showed up and told you to get rid of all the collectibles you own, all the figurines all the stuffed toys and dolls and gave you eternity in exchange would you resist ? It really isn't as hard or as big of a sacrifice as you would think. ;)

  1. Amen and Amen!! I have been led down this same path. I am in the process of removing all graven images in my home, and obeying every other commandment that I can find in the Bible!! Praise Yahweh for His grace!!! Everyone thinks I'm a radical, but when I thought about it I thought what are they accusingly of? I take it as a compliment now to be radically following my Savior Yeshua!!

    1. That is amazing that God gives us ALL the same messages: its just whether we take the time to stop and listen.:):) God bless you for stopping and recognizing his voice xo The great news in the end is When we follow Jesus, HE warned us that we will be oppressed but do not fear for HE has already overcome the world and deprived it of the power to really harm us John 16:33. The more we are ridiculed and oppressed the greater your rewards in heaven so if you are being ridiculed for trusting in our Saviour I would say you are just about where you should be ;) Keep up the good work. We are all his soldiers in Christ and we all have a part to play :)

  2. This is a very tough one. I did a Google search on the subject and your post is one of the results that came up. We truly love and want to so please Abba in our home, and live righteously before Him, but want to make sure we do not add to His commandments and in so doing "shut up heaven" for our children. Not only have they got crates full of toys, which we previously thought were of good report, but on our home-school wall hangs their beautiful art-works of the family, and the farm-animals, and the grass and the sky, etc. So you see the dilemma. Not only that, but I am a Christian filmmaker, making movies which I hope will reach millions for the Kingdom, and indeed they have, but in the strictest sense that would count as 2nd commandment territory too, wouldn't it? Now of course, in the books of Moses we specifically see God instructing Moses to appoint certain craftsmen (who were skilled to do so) to mould images of heavenly and earthly creatures for the tabernacle and the priestly garments, and later again with the building of the temple in Solomon's time. Perhaps that was the only exception. Do you still allow your children to create art?

    1. Good morning Morne. Thank you for your comment. I too am struggling as all of us to figure out exactly what God wants us to do and not do. We do still do art with the children but I am very quick to try to keep the art to a biblical craft of some sort...however in saying that the children have drawn the lion from the Daniel and the lions den as well as others I'm sure. Because I myself believe in homeschooling and will homeschool my grandchild, I understand what you mean as well as not wanting to "shut up heaven" for them as well..... its a hard one and one that has many searching.

  3. Would you see this extending to photographs as well? Can you imagine how a literal application of this commandment would change your life? No Internet, no pictures in books or magazines, no television, no photos, no encyclopedias or homeschooling curriculum, no family photo's. It becomes clear why Paul said there is NONE of us righteous, no not one.

  4. Absolutely correct.

  5. I know this was written awhile ago but I'm kind of struggling with this at the moment and I've been praying and researching and trying to discern of what God's will for my life is on this matter.

If this is true though then what toys ARE okay for our children? I'm not trying to say this in a condescending way, I'm really lost and curious. I have a 9 month old right now and trying to picture his collection of toys without any stuffed animals, little people, etc. and it's hard to imagine what is okay and what isn't. Nearly every toy out there has a picture of an animal or some kind of character. Even the intimate toys have smiling faces on them.

And like a commenter mentioned above, do you believe this extends to books and posters teaching children what animals look like? What about photographs of family?

Would love to hear your thoughts on that.

    Thanks for your post!

    1. Ahh...I just noticed I said "intimate", I mean INANIMATE (or however you spell it lol). Definitely not intimate, sometimes I really dislike these auto-correct dictionary things. I meant inanimate like his little workbench and a remote control and things like that.

  6. I find it funny that Amish children aren't allowed dolls with faces, yet are still allowed dolls.... do they think because the dolls don't have faces that the children can't find them a comfort or be attached to them? It makes no sense really. They also don't have any photographs.

  7. I also have been moved by the Holy Spirit to rethink my collections of graven images. I started with a love of how amazing bears have been created by our Father. I was gifted a stuffed bear and over the years have a collection of about 100. I've displayed them in a toy room for my grandchildren to play with as they delight in the various different designs. The Lord began small urges in my soul over the past year and I began questioning whether these were graven images. Of course I don't consider that I worship these toys however I keep hearing a whisper from The Lord regarding these collections. I now believe I need to burn by His command these graven images. It's just like satan to draw our eyes toward an apparent innocent cute item then lead us down into sin. Thank you for your article confirming what our Father has been sharing with me over the past year. I feel the explaining to my grandchildren will be met with confrontation from their parents that Nana has become unreasonable however I trust The Lord to bring truth and blessings to their souls by my obedience.

  8. This is an amazing message. I pray that the great I AM That I AM continues to bless you and myself and all His children on how to obey all of His commands. I too was convicted to rid my life of all graven images including dolls, stuffed animals, statues of flowers and animals. As for what toys a child can have, toys like planes and easy bake ovens are in the image of things made by man and not the Almighty, so these would not be graven images. It is so important for believers to rid themselves of all idols and to render their heart completely to I AM. Word of I AM.

  9. Shalom! I heard this message from God, two years ago in the shower. It was Christmas time and I was devastated at the implications of eliminating the tree, all the trinkets and the presents that I had already purchased for my four children (then aged 3-10)..and there was the nativity, Yikes! And the art on the walls.it was so overwhelming. My husband thought I had lost my mind! Anyway, the toys we still have are legos, balls, bikes, musical instruments, tea sets, bubbles. We do a lot of fun science experiments and stay busy planning our food, cooking together..and I take them to the Y to swim lots. As far as the artwork, we painted patterns and splatters over them...they look nice-ish. Today I am revisiting this subject, because after 2 years some more images/likenesses have creeped in. I had a dream from the Lord about them...that having those items that are likenesses/images zaps the believer of his/her spiritual strength in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. May God continue to strengthen usas we open our eyes.

  10. I keep asking the Father about this and revisiting this and I am fully convinced that dolls and stuffed toys, figurines etc are idols or graven images but I am really struggling with clearing out my daughter's toys, not because of myself but because of how my husband and family will react. I feel like I can't go over my husband but the toys are really bothering me. It does seem much more healthy and normal for our children to play with other children rather than 'pretend' children or animals. I have gotten rid of my own ornament/figurines (hardly had any anyway) and know it was the right thing to do. However I did not realize that graven images would be pictures unless they were religious.

  11. Thank you so much for this article/post. JAH spoke to me yesterday evening and pointed out 'graven images' while I reading something. Then I thought "What exactly is graven images JAH?" My research lead me to another article pointing out everything from statues to dolls to figurines, etc. I was absolutely shocked and heartbroken that I had been unknowingly disobeying him. I really don't have pictures or statues, but I did have about 8 things (dolls, stuffed animals, fish-shapped souvenir from FL) that was stored away in a closet for years. First thing I thought was to bag up everything and throw it away immediately. Did I? No. It was dark/nighttime and I figured I would dispose of everything the next day (today). I woke and again thought to read just a little bit more about this, b/c you know, I might be fanatical/overthinking this. Note: This is what happens when you don't obey JAH immediately, you begin to question what you're told and make excuses about why it may not make sense. I'm glad that JAH lead me to this blog post. It quickly confirmed not only what JAH told me but also, quote "It is not neurotic or fanatical to do what God commands of us." One of the most profound statements in the post for me. So I jumped up, bagged all the dolls and even a couple of small token dolls I remembered that I was given as gifts/thanks from two different people, got dressed, threw it all in the dumpster, came back and cleansed/dedicated my home to JAH. I feel so much better. I figured by throwing these things away, if I'm wrong still there's nothing to lose but some dolls I allowed myself to become attached to, but if I'm right I have everything to gain.

  12. What’s the Real Meaning of “No Idols”? https://staleyfamilyministries.com/what-s-the-real-meaning-of-no-idols.html
I hope this article gives better understanding.

  13. I am so glad to hear that more and more people are waking up to this and being obedient. I cleared my home of these things and have not looked back.
What to give children? A baby does not appreciate these things and a grown person does not either (or should not). So why does a child "need" these things? Answer: They don't. Treat them as an adult and they will act as an adult and not grow up to be a big child. Teach them to trust in and be obedient in YHWH and not the nonsense of this world.
May YHWH bless you for sharing this information.

  14. I just wanted to post that God showed me this as I was learning about deliverance and how these items can hinder someone from being delivered. I had got rid of all my daughters dolls and toys and yesterday was Christmas. She got some things that were carved image toys: fishing poles with fish, unicorn sleep wear, monopoly junior, and hungry hippos toys. I didn’t get rid of them last night. But I had a dream last night that I was in my home and found some playing cards and the queen of spades stood out in the deck. I’ve learned that playing cards are demonic. So today I just knew I needed to get rid of these idols. My daughter had already got attached to the hippos. She started crying when I told I was throwing them out. Which I think is a clear indication of a problem... to cry over something that has no life and that does not love you. I got rid of these things and got back lash from my husband but still praying God will open his eyes as he is not yet saved. But I repented for the sin of allowing them into my house, then casted out any demons that came in with these items and dedicated my house to God. Thanks for sharing this post. It was encouraging in my decision to be obedient to Christ our Savior who has given us eternal life! Amen.
